A Salty Sea Dog

Character... Hmmm. I wanted this study to be all about brush work, but with the aim of creating a character sketch that almost tells a story on its own. This guy (a photo I nabbed from the internet) is already interesting, to be sure, but I'm hoping the style of painting pushes the imagination a bit further; maybe he's been on a troller boat, fishing for twenty or thirty years, coming on land in someplace like Gloucester, Ma only long enough to meet his unspoken, possibly illicit needs? Has he taken to the high seas to put himself beyond the reach of the law, maybe? A Jack The Ripper sort? Or, is he just Gary, a retired electrical engineer, who spent a good deal of his savings on an ice-cream truck, which he's pretty sure is now ruining his marriage? Who buys and operates an ice-cream truck in Wasagamack, Manitoba, Gary???
